Saying ‘I Do’ to a Sustainable Wedding

There is no better day than Earth Day 2020 to say ‘I do” to a more sustainable wedding. We all know that the wedding industry creates much waste and the time is now to be making changes, for the sake of our future planet. Being more sustainable is becoming the new standard, and as a couple planning a wedding, here are some things you can say “I do” to.

Let’s talk wedding flowers here.

In working with your floral designers, ask for locally grown options. Say “I do” to local Flower Farms – you are not only boosting local economy, you are creating less of a carbon footprint.

Another big issue in floral design is floral foam. It is often found at the base of bouquets as an anchor, keeping flowers in their design and soaking up water, helping them last longer. Unfortunately, it is toxic and non-biodegradable, unhealthy for designers to regularly work with and once in the landfill, will never break down. Many florists nowadays choose to work completely foam free. In working with your designer, say “I do” to alternative ways in floral design.

Get the most out of your wedding day blooms by saying “I do” to reusing your ceremony flowers in your reception. Discuss with your florist, the idea of re-purposing the aisle arrangements or bridesmaids’ bouquets into the reception for them to be enjoyed from the beginning to the end of your big day.

And lastly, saying “I do” to giving back to your community with the re-purposing and re-styling of your wedding flowers. Why let these expensive and still beautiful florals go to waste, when they still have joy-creating power? A floral re-purposing organization, Forget Me Knot Flowers will pick up you flowers at the conclusion of your reception, and with our volunteers, will create precious bedside bouquets, tagged with your names, and then personally deliver to those in nursing care facilities, spreading love and hope. There is no better way to end your wedding celebration, knowing your florals will continue to bring cheer to those needing an emotional boost – an act of kindness and charitable way for a couple to start their married life.

Prioritize sustainability and waste reduction initiatives – make choices that put our planet first. The good news here is that there are creative options for couples getting married to have a sustainable wedding. With a little planning beforehand, your still gorgeous and very thoughtfully planned out florals, can continue to bring joy to others in your community and be kinder to our environment. Say “I do” to that!
